Creating a High Performance Culture

Reid and Hubbell in the Ivey Business Journal article astutely zeroed in on the dilemma of many organizations today especially in this period of global recession. They write, “How many organizations develop a brilliant strategy and then fail to execute? How many embark on a major change that does not get successfully implemented or takes too long? How many leaders sit at the executive table where good decisions were made, agreement achieved, commitments made, then only to watch, perplexed, as little or nothing happens? How often do we see creative ideas and innovative plans become stymied by bureaucratic process and energy-draining efforts? In most cases, the cause is the absence of a performance culture.”

Culture is the integration of values, beliefs and assumptions which spur the behavior of people on a day-to-day basis.  It is the way things are done around here.” Culture drives the organization, its actions and results. It determines how individuals think, act and feel.

Performance is the way the organization, teams and individuals achieve their desired objectives in alignment with the organization’s vision, mission and strategy.

These two aspects of an organization are intertwined. In many researches and studies, notably John P. Kotter’s Corporate Culture and Performance (1992), a connection has been made between culture and performance. Many leading experts have pointed out that at the heart of each successful organization is a culture that strives for excellent performance every day. Organizations that are leaders in their industry are a result of their management’s deliberate efforts to inculcate a performance driven culture, a culture that is rooted deeply in all levels in the organization.

How then can an organization create a culture that will energize the organization to peak performance? Creating a performance driven culture requires a systems approach to managing the performance of organizations, teams and individuals.
