A Creativity Tale

IT ALL started in 2003 when three restless ladies met for lunch in a garden restaurant in Tagaytay…. One was a seasoned trainer looking for a different kind of training program; the other a multi-awarded editor and writer whose prolific ideas were waiting to be harvested and the third member of this set was a long time human resource practitioner wanting to find the fountain of solutions to all the myriad workplace problems.

Over heaps of garden salad and endless pasta, the ladies mused and pondered on this question, “What if there was one thing that could solve one’s problems at work and in life in one whack?”

Then suddenly, in that somnolent breezy afternoon, a Eureka experience happened…. Of course, they said! The point of the matter was not to find the one solution to all problems. The whole point was to find what could churn out many solutions to all of our problems: a solutions maker!

Reaching deep into their collective experience, they drew out an answer: Creativity!

Creativity is the ability to churn out endless solutions to all our everyday problems and even mind-boggling problems of the world.

What if your subordinates were creative? They would find solutions on their own first before bothering you with their problems! Nice…

What if your co-employees were creative? They would keep on improving and improving on their performance so that would keep you on your toes! Challenging…

What if everyone in your organization were creative? Then, your company would be at the top of the heap and leave your competitors grasping for breath as they try to catch up with you? Smirk, smirk…….

What if our government officials were creative? (Aren’t they already? Nah, I meant, creative in solving the country’s problems). Then, millions of Filipinos would not need to leave the country for foreign shores and leave their hearts and wallets behind….

What if I were creative? Then, no problem would be too big or too depressing for me to handle and I would be at the top of the career ladder in no time! Hiyaaaa! (karate kick)

But wait, can creativity be learned?

After that lunch in the hills of Tagaytay, the three ladies rode back to reality and got in touch with the creativity gurus …. After sifting through the imitations, they struck gold and identified the creativity gurus, the real deal, the originals and digested everything they got their hands on in terms of research, studies, books, articles, the works!

The conclusion: Yup, creativity can be learned! And what’s more, dahlings, creativity is a S-C-I-E-N-C-E !

This means …. It can be learned, it can be taught, it can be replicated. The light at the end of the tunnel!

The only thing left to do was design a training program for Filipinos on Unleashing Creativity.

After two pilot programs in 2003 and 2004, the ladies were rrrready….. eight creativity training seminars in 2005, five in 2006 and two in 2007, 418 graduates, 60 companies, and consistent above average evaluation ratings later, the ladies are now on the roll ….. And by the way, along the way, they were able to get two gentlemen trainers too for the ride…..
